Gems have been considered both poisons and medicines, barometers of everything from truth to danger. They have been used as signifiers of virtue, nobility, and even divinity. Conversely, they’ve often represented tyranny. Occasionally their power even strays from the symbolic to the literal, resulting in cults, relics, and legends. Wars have been fought, industries have been created, and empires have risen and fallen, all in pursuit of that which is beautiful, valuable, and rare.
You may have heard stories about kings and queens, adventurers, wars, empires exploring treasures. From sunken ships to cities of diamonds and gold, history, mythology to pure fantasies have one thing in common: they all have something glittering at their heart or in fingers
It is human desire to covet. As is the tendency to worship, to adorn, one might even say to treasure. But what catches the eye? What draws us to anything? A bright color? A flash of light? What is it about gems that so uniquely compels and possesses us? How have these glittering bits of the world had such power over our hearts and our minds throughout history?
“Your need to see and possess glowing, shining jewels is as intrinsic to what we are, as who we are”
The singular human desire for beauty and a collective obsession with gemstones goes deeper than emotional neurochemistry. we see certain colors more vividly and more clearly than we see anything else. Whether it’s the abundance of green or the danger of red, we have evolved to look for colors, and to have an extreme emotional response to them. And even more so to shine, and above all to sparkle.

“Whether they are collectable specimens, used in everyday jewelry, or incorporated into beautiful works of art, gemstones are viewed as highly prestigious objects in many—if not most— cultures. It could be argued that their value is entirely man- made, but the fact remains that fine gems represent an apex of material quality, visual beauty, and fine craftsmanship”

“How a gem interacts with light is the very essence of its nature. Light is the source of a gemstone’s beauty, color, and sparkle; it is also a useful tool for the identification of gems, since each stone has its own particular set of optical properties. For example, there are a dozen or more red gemstones, and many of the red hues within each type of stone will have many different shades. All these properties are a way of identifying gemstones, although no single one is diagnostic in itself. Some categories such as luster are subjective observations; others, such as a mineral’s refractive index, are objective”
